Traditional Bobotie Recipe – From South Africa

Bobotie is a traditional South African dish that is a flavorful fusion of Dutch, Indian, and Malay influences. Ingredients:

  • 1 kg ground beef or lamb
  • 2 onions, chopped (300 g)
  • 2 slices white bread, soaked in water (60 g)
  • 30g curry powder 
  • 15g ground cumin 
  • 15g ground coriander 
  • 30g chutney 
  • 30g apricot jam 
  • 15ml white wine vinegar
  • 15 ml oil 
  • 250ml  milk 
  • 3 eggs
  • 75g raisins
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 180°C.
  • Heat oil in a large pan and sauté onions until translucent.
  • Add the ground meat and cook until browned.
  • Add curry powder, cumin, coriander, chutney, apricot jam, and white wine vinegar. Mix well.
  • Add the soaked bread and raisins to the mixture.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  • Using a different bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until they are fully combined.
  • Pour the mixture of egg over the meat mixture into the baking dish.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes or until the egg custard is set and golden brown on top.
  • Serve hot with rice or vegetables.
