  • 1 kg beef chuck, cut into 5cm cubes
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, chopped

  • 2 tbsp grated ginger
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup rice wine
  • 1/2 cup mirin
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2-star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 cup beef stock
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional, for garnish)
  • Steamed rice, for serving.

How To Prepare This Recipe:

  • Preheat the oven to 160°C.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in some sizable oven-safe pot over medium-high heat.
  • Add the beef cubes to the pot and cook until browned on all sides, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Add the onion, garlic, and ginger to the pot and sauté for 2-3 minutes till fragrant.
  • In a small bowl, mix the soy sauce, sake, mirin, brown sugar, star anise, and cinnamon stick.
  • Pour the soy sauce mixture over the beef and vegetables in the pot.
  • Add enough beef stock to the pot to cover the beef.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer, then cover the pot and transfer it to the oven.
  • Bake the beef for 3-4 hours until tender and falling apart.
  • Remove the pot from the oven and transfer the beef to a serving dish.
  • Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired.
  • Serve the Asian braised beef hot with steamed rice.
