The meal known as “matooke” is regarded to be Uganda’s “national dish” due to its widespread popularity. Green bananas are boiled and then mashed to create this dish, which is often eaten with stews or sauces. A meal of matooke is not only nutrient-dense and filling, but it is also an excellent source of carbs and fiber-rich foods.
Ingredients:
- 8–10 green bananas (approximately 1 kilogram)
- 2 cups or 500 milliliters of water
- Salt to taste
Instructions:
- To prepare, first, peel the green bananas and then chop them into bite-sized pieces.
- Place the banana chunks in the bottom of a big saucepan, then fill the pot with enough water to cover the bananas.
- Add salt to taste.
- After covering the pot, put it on the burner and set the heat to medium.
- Allow the bananas to be subjected to steam for forty-five minutes to an hour, or until they have reached the desired degree of suppleness.
- After the bananas have finished cooking, take the pot off the heat, and using a potato masher or a fork, mash the cooked bananas until they are completely smooth.
Serve hot, accompanied by the stew or sauce of your choice.
